Cloud architecture and backend engineering for enterprise systems

Backend systems and cloud infrastructure designed to stay fast, available and secure as your users, data and transactions grow.

What cloud and system architecture covers

System architecture is the set of decisions that determine how software behaves under real conditions: how data is stored, how services talk to each other, how the system copes with a traffic spike or a failed server, and how it is deployed and monitored.

These decisions are cheap to get right early and expensive to change later. A system that works for fifty users can slow down badly at five thousand if the database was never designed for it, and an outage with no tested recovery plan can stop a business for a day.

OGLAT designs and builds the backend and infrastructure behind enterprise software, either as part of a system we are building or as a standalone engagement to stabilise and scale one you already have. Our core stack is Node.js and Express for APIs, PostgreSQL for data, and AWS or Vercel for hosting.

The Problem

Signs the architecture needs attention

Slow at peak times

Pages and reports crawl at month-end or during busy trading hours, exactly when people need them.

Outages without warning

The team learns something is down from customers, because nothing is monitoring it.

Risky releases

Every deployment is a tense manual exercise, so updates are postponed and pile up.

Rising hosting bills

Cloud spend keeps growing while nobody can say which part of the system is responsible.

What We Build

What we design and build

The scope depends on whether we are starting fresh or improving a running system. These are the areas an engagement usually covers.

API & backend services

Node.js and Express APIs with clear contracts, authentication, rate limiting and versioning.

Data modelling

PostgreSQL schemas designed for your real queries, with indexing, constraints and migrations managed properly.

Cloud infrastructure

Single-region or multi-region environments on AWS or Vercel, defined as code so they can be reproduced, reviewed and rolled back.

Deployment pipelines

Automated testing and deployment, so releases are routine, frequent and reversible.

Monitoring & alerting

Logs, metrics and alerts that tell your team about a problem before users do.

Security & access control

Role-based access, encryption in transit and at rest, secrets management and audit logging.

How We Work

How an architecture engagement runs

  1. 01

    Assess what exists

For a running system we review the code, database, infrastructure and incident history. For a new one we gather the load, data and compliance requirements.

  2. 02

    Design for the real load

We size the architecture to the usage you expect over the next few years, without over-building for a scale you may never reach.

  3. 03

    Build and migrate safely

Changes are rolled out in stages with a rollback path, so the business keeps running throughout.

  4. 04

    Hand over with documentation

Your team receives diagrams, runbooks and monitoring, so they can operate the system with confidence.

Who It's For

Where this fits best

  • Companies whose software has slowed down as usage grew
  • Enterprises moving from on-premise servers to the cloud
  • Teams building a new platform that must scale from day one
  • Businesses with an in-house product and no senior backend architect

FAQ

Questions we hear most

Which cloud platforms do you work with?

Mainly AWS and Vercel. We choose based on the workload: Vercel suits web applications that need fast global delivery, and AWS suits systems that need more control over compute, networking and data.

Can you improve a system another team built?

Yes. We start with an assessment of the existing code and infrastructure, then recommend changes in order of impact. Many problems can be fixed without a rewrite.

Do we need multi-region hosting?

Only if you serve users in distant regions or cannot tolerate a regional outage. It adds cost and complexity, so we recommend it when the business case is clear and design a simpler setup when it is not.

How do you keep downtime low during a migration?

We run the old and new environments side by side, move data in stages, test with real traffic patterns and keep a rollback path open until the new system has proved itself.

Why PostgreSQL?

It is a mature, open-source relational database with strong data integrity, good performance on complex queries and no licence fee. It handles the transactional workloads that ERP, CRM and finance systems depend on.
